Bluefin Tuna Fishing & School Tuna Fishing

Gloucester has been one of the hottest Tuna fishing ports on the east coast for decades. Some of the largest tuna to over 1000 lbs have been caught within 3 miles of Gloucester. The current around Cape - Ann forms an Eddie that creates a breeding ground for herring, the favorite food of Tuna. Gloucester is also close to Jefferys ledge that has historically held the most and the largest Tuna.

 

Tuna range from 35lbs to over 1000 lbs. The record for a Tuna is over 1400 lbs!

Tuna can be caught by trolling custom made Squid bars at just the right speed or setting baits to the right depths.

The Kayman Too is outfitted with Penn 130 Big game International reels and custom bent butt rods.

Last Year the Kayman Too had a 90% success rate in landing Tuna!

The best time for Tuna varies year to year. Late August - Oct is good with Late Sept- Late Oct usually being the best.

All the Tuna north of Cape Cod are Bluefin Tuna. They are a federally regulated fish that limits change on frequently. The Federal regulations that limit the amount of tuna a person can catch are changed regularly.

 

School Tuna

   

School Tuna have made a big comeback in the last 5 years. These fish can be seen on the surface smashing bait regularly. They have been seen in harbors and of beeches in the last few years. They are fast movers and a great thrill to catch!

Trolling lures is usually the most productive way to fish for them. Top water lures skip across the water behind the boat, when the fish hit the lure it is like a big explosion in the water!

School tuna range from 40 pounds to over 200 lbs. Average school tuna have been around 100 lbs.

Penn 80s internationals and 6/0 stand up gear are used when fishing for School Tuna.
