July 3 2010

Never before have we seen so much Cod fish show up in July! Cod fishing now is blowing away our Spring fishery. Limits of Cod fish have been caught even by first timers this past week. The fish seem to be spread out so nice long drifts are the norm.
Cod fish have been Market sized with a 15lbers spicing up the action. These fish all come from 200 plus ft of water were the temp is still 43 deg. The fish are feeding off the bottom on crabs and urchins which makes the meat much firmer and tastier than fish on eels! All the fishing has been on jigs so there is no messy bait to use and no Dog fish!” Which by the way Marine Fisheries has announced is now fully recovered” We should all send them a letter of congratulations for a job well done!!
For those who think you have to go out when the weather is freezing and the seas are rough to catch Cod,we invite you to a great day of relaxing Cod fishing. You can even rest your favorite beverage on the gunwale while you reel em” in!!
Lots of Tuna around as well for those who would like to mix up the trip and try to land one of the hardest fighting fish in the ocean!
Split trips for Codfishing are posted at www.kaymancharters.com or give a call to capt’s cell phone at 508 577 0541

June 26

Cod fishing seems to be getting even better as fish are moving into the deeper water and not getting the calm lock jaw as we were seeing on a few flat sunny days last week. A great bunch of 8-15 lb Cod have been coming up on jigs and a variety of teasers. The experienced guys are still out fishing there buddies 2:1 as they move there tackle along the bottom in a more attractive way than the novice,
Tuna Trips have Landed some nice Large fish fishing live baits of of a kite when the conditions allow make for some real thrilling hook-ups. These are strong fish and put anglers to the test!

Tuna have showed up in good numbers, We will be loading the gear aboard for those who want to test there muscles as all the fish being caught are reported to  be quite a battle!

New England Fishing charters

My crew and I went out of Gloucester MA for an 9 hour cod trip on the Kayman Too. We had previously gone out of Wells ME, and with another boat out of Gloucester, with mixed results. And for the last 2 yrs, we had been blown off, and not gotten out at all. It did’nt look good at first, with a 15 to 20 knot wind out of the east. We headed out of the harbor at 5 am, with no coffee or breakfast due to an alarm malfunction! It was a very rough ride out, taking a little over 2 hours, pounding head on into 6-8 ft seas. Half the crew was pretty queasy at this point. That all changed as soon as we reached the fishing grounds on Stellwagon Bank. Captain Rob swung the boat around to set up the first drift, and told us to drop. Within 30 seconds of hitting the bottom with our jigs, all 6 of us hooked up! That was the start of a fantastic day of ground fishing. We were smack on the cod and pollock all morning long. And , a treat for anyone who has ever jigged for cod, we were only in about 100 fow! The boat was set up with topnotch equipment, hi-speed diawa reels loaded with 80 lb test firewire braid. It was very easy to feel the bottom, and the bites using this setup. We filled our first 30 gallon tote with fish in about 20 minutes on that first drift. The action was steady after that, with shorter drifts due to the speed the wind was pushing the boat. But the captain did a great job positioning us, keeping the fish coming. The cod were plentiful, though average size, maybe 10 to 17 or 18 lbs. The pollock too bit all day, from 5 lbers to a couple of 3 ft long 15 lbers. And, as an added treat, we caught and released 3 stripers, 2 that were around 20 to 25 lbs, and a monster 4 foot long fish that the captain estimated at +40lbs! I had never heard of catching stripers while jigging for cod before, but seeing is believing! All in all, we filled about 5 1/2 totes with fish, and since I did’nt have anything better to do on the ride back in, I counted them up as Rob filleted. We ended up with 42 cod, and 31 pollock, and each of the 6 of us brought home a 25-30 lb bag of fillets!
If any of you forum members are interested in chartering a trip for groundfish, feel free to pm me for more info, and check out the Kayman Charters website. This was by far the best trip we have taken , in 15 years our crew has been going out. Captain Rob was a joy to fish with, and even more impressive that he did it solo, with no mate on board!

Cod and Pollock fishing remain strong

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

The Ground fishing continues to be excellent from Stellwagon to Tillies Bank. Large Pollock and Cod have been filling totes on a regular basis. These fish are piled 20ft thick at times hammering anything that moves in the early morning, then the experienced anglers still get them as they get trickier to catch. All hands have been leaving with large bag fulls of fillets

Haddock fishing has not been as fast action last week but still a good box for those who are good with the bait.

Stellwagon Bank Cod and Pollock Fishing

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

May 18 2010

Stellwagon to Tillies Banks have been loaded with fish! Top feeding Pollock are the newest addition to the Gulf of Maine. Weekend boaters chasing birds like they do for Bass and Blues are finding schools of Pollock gorging on eels! These Pollock are from 4-20 plus pounds and will put your rod to the gunwale when hooked! This has been a great addition to the already good Cod and Haddock fishing!
Codfish come in by the boatload on some days and are caught only by the skillful anglers on others. Cod in the twenty pound range have been top catch the past week with high catch a 33 lber brought in by Rob Noble of Ct.His catch was a 18lb Pollock on the teaser and his pool winning Cod on the jig. He ate his lunch after that one!
June 9th is the next split trip opening go to www.kaymancharters.com to sign up for this trip!

Cod and Haddock Regs Amendment 16

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

Under Amendment 16, the average catch of these stocks by each component during fishing years 2001-2006 was used to caculate the commercial/recreational allocation for these stocks. This resulted in a recreational allocation of 27.5% of the groundfish for the Guf of Maine Haddock and 33.7% for Cod

The allotment is as follows

Codfish  5,892,956 pounds

Haddock 714,298 pounds

Haddock limit has been reduced to 18 inches no bag limit

Cod remains at 24 inches Bag limit of 10 per angler

Hook restrictions have been lifted

Halibut has been increased to 41 inches

If the recreational fishery exceeds its yearly allocation of GOM Cod or Haddock as listed above, NMFS will adjust the recreational season, limits or sizes for the following years
